Joe Hearty is a composer, arranger, and producer from the north-east of Scotland, now living and working between London and Athens.
He spent much of the 2000s touring and releasing records on labels like Too Pure, Big Scary Monsters, and Slow Learner, hitting pause on band life to escape a somewhat regressive environment and to explore queer life outside of music.
After a decade of heartbreak, love, and loss, Joe returned to songwriting and record-making in 2023 with a renewed sense of purpose: to create the unashamedly queer music that he couldn’t years before. Music that embraces ambiguity, defies boundaries, and celebrates the human experience in all its twisted beauty.

In his latest collection of songs, the debut Album ‘Down’, Joe writes with clarity and heart, exploring his journey into queer adulthood, the death of his father and learning to find joy again. Playful, melody-laden arrangements butt up against more sparsely decorated stories of loss and longing, with Joe’s warm baritone skipping from a whisper to a bellow.
The album’s first single ‘Requiems’, due January 30th, is a romping cacophony of strings, piano and sing-along refrains reminiscent of Sergeant Pepper-era Beatles, or Rufus Wainwright, that traverses the hardships of grief and loss with a wry smile.
The singles ‘So Easy It’s Wrong’, ‘Simple Life’ and ‘Just Keep Spinning’ will follow between March and June. The full album release date is TBC.
